     Donald L. DeVriese, 79, of Peoria, passed away at 2:40 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

     He was born in Peoria on May 7, 1930, a son of Camiel Joseph and Mary (Hooste) DeVriese. He married Josephine T. Gorman on October 21, 1950 at St. Boniface Parish in Peoria. She survives.

     Don is also survived by his daughter, Camillia J. (Don) Pioletti of Eureka; sons, Todd J. (Leila) DeVriese of St. Cloud, MN, Darren M. (Tracy) DeVriese of Grand Rapids, MI and Matthew L. (Fay) DeVriese of Hawthorne Woods; and seven grandchildren, Joseph C., Michela K. and Matthew S. Pioletti, Ashley J. DeVriese, Jessica L.S. and Emily M.S. DeVriese and Johann D. DeVriese. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Camillia J. Cain and grandson, Adam M. Pioletti.

     Don was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, serving with the 6th Armored Division in Korea. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1953 and earned the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars.

     He retired in 1991 as a Research Inspector, after forty-two years of service, with Caterpillar’s Mossville facility.

     Don was a parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church in Peoria and a sixty-one year Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus St. Jude Council 4333 in Peoria.

     He enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. He was a member of the Peoria/Pekin Duplicate Bridge Club and the Sand Trappers Golf League, both at the Knights of Columbus Spalding Council 427 on Radnor Road in Peoria. He was also a member of the Caterpillar Retirees Golf League.

     Don was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He most enjoyed being married to the love of his life and all of the beautiful years they shared together.

     Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment of the cremated remains will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Donald’s memory to Holy Family Catholic Church or to Advocates for Access.

     Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home, 428 West McClure Avenue, in Peoria.

John 11:32-45

32 And so Mary, when she arrived where Jesus was and caught sight of him, fell at his feet, saying to him: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33 Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping and the Jews that came with her weeping, groaned in the spirit and became troubled; 34 and he said: “Where have YOU laid him?” They said to him: “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus gave way to tears. 36 Therefore the Jews began to say: “See, what affection he used to have for him!” 37 But some of them said: “Was not this [man] that opened the eyes of the blind man able to prevent this one from dying?”

Now Jesus raised his eyes heavenward and said: “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 True, I knew that you always hear me; but on account of the crowd standing around I spoke, in order that they might believe that you sent me forth.” 43 And when he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice: “Laz´a·rus, come on out!” 44 The [man] that had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his countenance was bound about with a cloth. Jesus said to them: “Loose him and let him go.”

45 Therefore many of the Jews that had come to Mary and that beheld what he did put faith in him;
